Jeru review

If you’re looking for somewhere to celebrate, look no further than Jeru. Serving up the flavours of the Mediterranean, Jeru is on Berkley Street in Mayfair, but doesn’t have any pretentiousness you could expect from its location.

I’m extremely indecisive when it comes to food and having studied the menu before my visit and wanting to eat a bit of everything, I was relieved when they offered us the chef’s selection; a host of pre-selected starters, mezze, mains and dessert.

On arrival, I had a delicious Jeru Spritz which was fruity and perfect for a summer evening but throughout the evening, we shared a bottle of rose to accompany our food.

First up was their Wood-Fired Potato Bread, which I expected to be quite heavy, but was so light and fluffy and served with rich honey with truffle. It was also perfect to mop up the Black Chickpea Hummus, which was really smooth and topped with British foraged mushrooms.

Looking back, I think the mezze course was my favourite as the Halloumi Doughnuts were to die for, and the only way I want to eat halloumi from now on. These were balanced with the Tuna Crudo, served with a fennel salsa and whipped avocado and Crispy Hasselback Artichokes; another creative way to serve vegetables with a Mediterranean twist of caramelized celeriac tahini, white anchovies and a spring onion salsa.

I probably could’ve eaten at least two portions of each of the mezze dishes but had to save space for mains and dessert, and I’m glad I did.

For main course, we were served Steak (cooked medium-rare) and a whole Sea Bream, which was expertly filleted for us at the table. Both were perfectly cooked and matched really wellwith the side of Batata Harra; crispy spiced potatoes topped with herbs.

I said at the start that we were visiting for a celebration and the team kindly brought a dessert plate of ice cream with chocolate to say happy birthday to my dad, alongside our Sesame Mille Feuille. Whilst Mille Feuille wouldn’t be my usual choice of dessert, the inclusion of sesame meant it wasn’t too sweet, but was still really tasty and light.

Overall, what an evening…Jeru really is one to put on your bucket list, and is perfect for a special occasion!
