Marlene Brunch at Engel Review

Engel, the cocktail bar and restaurant nestled within The Royal Exchange, has launched its newest Saturday sensation: Marlene Brunch. Inspired by screen legend Marlene Dietrich and her iconic film Der Blaue Engel (The Blue Angel) this weekly series blends live music, theatrical flair, and indulgent brunch in a setting that channels the glamour of 1920s Berlin.

As Engel is located on the mezzanine, you ascend carpeted stairs framed by flowers. Inside, the space is rich with low red plush seating, dark wooden tables, soft lighting, and deep red carpet—setting the tone for an opulent atmosphere. From our table, we could look out over the historic grandeur of the Grade I-listed Royal Exchange.

Guests can choose two or three courses, with the option to elevate the experience with bottomless Spritz or Prosecco (£30 for 90 minutes) or half-price bottles of Ruinart champagne.

The menu, curated by chefs Samantha Williams and Lorena Tomassi, offers six starters. We went got a little luxury: I chose the lobster roll with pickles, Boston lettuce, spicy Japanese mayo, coriander, cress, and avocado mousse in a soft brioche bun. My friend had the spicy salmon tartare with avocado, served with crisp nori crackers. The use of shichimi togarashi—a Japanese spice blend- added citrusy heat. It was her favourite dish of the day, thanks to its bold flavours and vibrant presentation. Other options included eggs Benedict, eggs Royale, burrata, Engel breakfast hotdog.

For mains, five options were on offer, including a beef burger, roast sea bass, vegetarian breakfast, and steak and eggs (added supplement). We’d both already had our eyes on the buttermilk fried chicken waffle. Crispy chicken, soft waffle, smoky bacon—it’s already a dream team. Maple syrup added sweetness, sriracha mayo brought a gentle kick. Every bite was crunchy, sweet and lightly spicy.   I’d order it again in a heartbeat.

For dessert, there were four tempting options: brioche French Toast, cheesecake, a Black Forest pancake, and the cake of the day. My friend and I split two—because choosing just one felt impossible. The cheesecake was light, with a crunchy biscuit base and fresh raspberries. Sweet but not heavy, it disappeared fast. The brioche French Toast was golden and crisp at the edges, soft in the middle, and generously topped with maple glaze and fresh berries. The honeycomb added a satisfying crunch.

All dishes are beautifully presented, showing the care and skill of the kitchen. Service was attentive without being rushed, with good pacing between courses. And yes—bottomless brunch lived up to its name. The staff made sure our glasses never saw the bottom.

Live music is a key part of the experience bringing together soul, pop, retro jazz, and burlesque. On our visit on 18th October, Selina Albright performed for two hours. Her soulful vocals and jazz added to the glamorous  atmosphere. Upcoming acts include Burlesque Idol UK Winner and star of the world-renowned La Clique Miss Jolie Papillon, jazz favourite Natalie Williams, Voice UK winner Jermain Jackman, and the charismatic Atila Huseyin.
