Onin.London Visits Caravan

Caravan, the craft coffee and all-day dining pioneer, opened new flagship restaurant last year in Covent Garden.

Caravan was started by three kiwis, Chris, Laura and Miles. They moved over to London from New Zealand In the early 2000s and started working, eating and drinking our way around town, Europe and the world, all the while getting ideas and thinking “when we open our own place…”

It is the eighth and largest site for the well-travelled all-day dining group. It is situated in a Grade II listed Victorian granary on Drury Lane that was also formerly a grain and seed store. Spanning two floors, it is the brand’s second central London restaurant since the opening of Fitzrovia in 2018.

Caravan Covent Garden features terrace dining wrapping around the site, a light filled lower ground floor for all day bar and dining, London’s most romantic table for two positioned in a subterranean light well, and the Green Room, their largest private hire and events space to date.

The Covent Garden restaurant will be open from morning to night offering breakfast, brunch, lunch, cocktails and dinner (and everything in between!). Guests are invited to eat and drink all day from fresh, seasonal, healthy and bold-flavoured menus inspired by Caravan’s global travels.

The venue is bright and airy full of good lighting which is perfect for making all those food pictures look as amazing as the food tastes.

My friend and I ordered a range of starters including the signature Jalapeño cornbread, Edamame and the delicious Burrata with beets, poppy seed vinaigrette and sherry.

There were no complaints with the starters so we were definitely looking forward to the mains. My friend went with the classic Sourdough Pizzas while I struggled to choose what to eat. Everything looked so good so it was a difficult choice. In the end I went with the Baked cod fillet with miso butter, nori puree, crushed potatoes and wilted spinach. Light refreshing and allowed us to leave room for dessert.

My friend and I shared The vegan Sorbets: mango, coconut and dark chocolate. As someone who isn’t a huge dessert lover, sorbets are the perfect way to end a meal.

Of course we had to wash our meal down with some of the delicious cocktails on offer. While I didn’t enjoy Caravan’s take on the Bloody Mary… it was a tad watery for my taste and no amount of Caravan’s signature Bloody Mary mix seemed to increase the flavour, the spicy marg really hit the spot.

Overall, my friend and I had a lovely lunch and I’ve recommended it to friends as a place to visit if they want comfort food and good drinks. So what are you waiting for? Visit one of Caravan’s 8 venues now!
