Review: Taste Mauritius @ New Cross

Trade Vics 39 (2)lrGrowing up one of my closest friends was Mauritian and I was fortunate enough to try a lot of different Mauritian dishes, it’s fair to say I was a huge fan of Mauritian based on that alone.

So when I heard about taste Mauritian at no 178, I was keen to head down and give it a try. It was nothing short of an amazing evening. Great smiles, amazing food and such a beautiful layout.

Taste Mauritian is brainchild of Selina Periampilai, who was an absolute delight and she was an amazing host. Selina has hosted over 30 Mauritian inspired supperclubs, pop ups and cookery classes in London and is a regular writer for JamieOliver.com. With those accolades it’s no surprise that everyone in attendance at no 178 was in for a treat.

Now the food! If you’re a lover of spice like me then this is definitely for you, although I must add there was a great balance in the spice levels. So the night began with a Mauritian inspired cocktail which was then followed by a starter, a main and dessert. We had a choice of the following:

Gateaux Piment, Aubergine Fritters,
Bhajia, Zasar, Coriander Satini &
Tomato Chutney

Mains:
Cari Poulet (Mauritian Style Chicken Curry),
Spiced Pilau Rice
Green Mango & Carrot Salad,
Coconut & Mint Satini
Sides
Fish Vindaye, red onion pickle
Chickpea Cari

Sorbet: Pineapple & Chilli Granita

Dessert:
Pineapple Rum Caramel Cake,
Homemade Coconut Ice Cream

The whole experience of a pop is one that I am fairly fond of, Selina however made this experience even greater with her pleasant nature and her clear understanding of the importance of great food. I genuinely felt as though I was reliving my teenage years enjoying those good old Mauritian dishes.

If you’re ever fortunate enough, please look out for anything with Selina Periampilai name on it. It was an absolute pleasure and I shall definitely be going back.
