Learn to cook Authentic Chinese Food at School of Wok
It’s Friday night, and you reach for the Deliveroo app or take out menu again, sighing at the expense of it all. But it doesn’t have to be like this. Heathy and fresh Chinese cooking isn’t as hard as you think.
School of Wok is a lovely little cooking school, situated in the heart of Covent Garden. The team are friendly and welcoming, and there are a full range of classes to pick from, from Japanese and sushi making, to Malaysian and more. Of course, specialising in Asian-style cooking.
Each class varies in length and price, dependent on the complexity and cooking level of the individual booking. We consider ourselves pretty good cooks, but when it comes to Chinese cooking, it was completely new to us, so we decided to undertake a beginner level Chinese Takeaway class.

You’re welcomed into the spacious open kitchen and dining space with a chilled glass of wine or beer, which is provided throughout the class (or soft drinks if preferred), as the teacher gives a quick introduction to all the knives and equipment you will be using, as well as the fresh ingredients and chopping techniques.
Our menu featured three classic Chinese dishes, including Wonton Soup, a flavourful chicken broth filled with pork mince, prawns, mushrooms, and Chinese chives. You’ll also learn how to prepare Black Bean Chicken, a mouthwatering stir-fry with a savoury black bean sauce, and Special Fried Rice, a dish made from seasoned rice wok-fried until crispy with meat, peas, and a fried egg.
We were also taught invaluable lessons on how best to use and season a wok, as well as learning temperature control, which is where I realised, I was going wrong at home.

The class was suitable for anyone who wants to learn the basics of Chinese cooking, from beginners to experienced cooks seeking to refine their skills and achieve an authentic taste every time.
At the end, we all sat around as a group to savour and enjoy our delicious and tasty dishes by candlelight. We definitely made some friends on this course, and it’s the perfect activity to with a friend, partner or even solo. You’re always paired up, so can meet new people and have a thoroughly enjoyable evening.
The space also sells all the equipment in-store, that you could possibly need to recreate your dishes at home, including woks, cleavers and recipe books. A lot of people on the course had received the course as a birthday or Christmas gift which we think is the ultimate thoughtful present.
