Shuttlecock Inc.: Alaskan Seafood Pop-Up

IMG-20140624-WA0002Pimlico Gardens is the setting for Gold Rush: The Last Frontier and Wild West themed seafood festival presented by Shuttlecock, the same company that brought you Mile High.

The gardens due to the size offered a more intimate festival which was amplified by the families in attendance.

As I absolutely adore seafood I was so excited about this event. Of course my first point of call was the food stands, and I was not disappointed. The Gravalax salmon stand served elderflower cured wild Alaskan salmon, not a fan of salmon usually but this vibrant pink to red fish tasted beautiful, sweet even. Imagine it if you can focaccia bread dressed with rocket leaves from chegworth, beet root then drizzled with a horse radish and mustard sauce.

The chef emphasised the health benefits of Alaskan seafood which we are informed is double the amount of protein than those found in the UK, this is due to it being farmed in unpolluted IMG-20140624-WA0003waters. The above fact was reiterated by numerous sources throughout our seafood experience.

The next stand Poach house served sable fish otherwise known as black cod commonly found in Asian restaurants. Poached in infused milk with Rosemary and bay Chris our Spanish chef delivered some more facts

“100 grams of sable fish is essentially a weeks worth of omega 3, a super food”

My eyes widen because in my mind my love of seafood is validated. The sable fish literally falls apart, melting in your mouth like a chocolate fondant. This confirms it, I need to expand my seafood palette outside of prawns and squid, especially if it’s Alaskan.

As I walk around and observe the vast array of entertainment, tents hosting arts and crafts, a folk band, actors with authentic southern accents entertaining the kids with a game reminiscent of polo, it took me back to my childhood to the point I wanted get involved, probably best I didn’t.

As the festival was coming to an end we decided there’s was only one thing left to do, take a selfie of course, I blame Instagram. As we were just about to pose a gentleman offered to take our picture, it would be rude to decline. As we thank this perfect gent for the gesture we find out he is John Harman representing Alaska seafood company, the people who collaborated with Shuttlecock for this event. After we find out about 5 different types of wild salmon he ends our conversation with saying about the Alaskan seafood “It’s about trying to marry protein with it’s eating qualities, it’s attributes, very much like wine”, and with that I leave a convert to Alaskan seafood.

Although this is a one day event if you love the mix of food and entertainment then look Shuttlecock as they have numerous events on the calendar.
