Sign of the Angel, Lacock, Wiltshire Review
Nestled in the heart of the picturesque village of Lacock, Wiltshire, Sign of the Angel is a charming five-bedroom inn and restaurant that offers both exceptional food and a slice of history. With its rustic elegance and historic backdrop, this 2 AA Rosette establishment is a perfect destination for those seeking a cosy yet sophisticated dining experience in one of England’s most iconic and quaint villages.
The inn, which dates back to 1482, has long been a fixture in Lacock, and its name originates from a gold coin called the “angel,” which was minted during the first reign of Edward IV. This fascinating historical detail adds an extra layer of charm to the already beautiful setting. Walking into Sign of the Angel feels like stepping back in time, with its exposed beams, stone walls, and intimate atmosphere. It effortlessly blends historic charm with modern comforts, creating a welcoming environment for both locals and visitors alike.
For those looking to indulge, the restaurant is renowned for its high-quality dishes, earning two AA Rosettes for its culinary excellence. The monthly supper club is a particular highlight, offering a five-course tasting menu for just £49.00 per person. This monthly event showcases the skill of the kitchen in crafting innovative dishes that reflect seasonal ingredients and creative flair.

On our visit, we were treated to a range of mouthwatering dishes that highlighted both the seasonal local ingredients and thoughtfulness. To start, we opted for the calamari and the pork belly. The calamari was perfectly cooked, with a crispy yet tender texture, paired with a delicate seasoning that enhanced its natural flavour. The pork belly, on the other hand, was melt-in-the-mouth tender that provided the perfect contrast to the succulent meat.
For the main course, I chose the chicken, mushroom, and leek pie, which was a comforting and satisfying dish – abundant in size. The pie had a golden, flaky crust that encased a rich filling of tender chicken, earthy mushrooms, and leeks. The dish was served with a side of beautifully mashed potatoes, peas, carrots, and gravy, making it the ultimate comfort food. My dining companion opted for the Kedgeree Smoked Finnan Haddock, a dish brimming with flavour and natural colours. The flakey haddock was complemented by coriander rice and peas, a poached egg, and a curried butter sauce, which added a delightful warmth to the dish.

To finish our meal, we indulged in homemade ice cream, which was a perfect end to an already satisfying meal. The ice cream was smooth, creamy, and refreshing, providing a sweet but not overpowering finale to the evening.
Lacock itself is a charming village, and Sign of the Angel serves as the perfect gateway to explore its beauty. Famous for being a movie set for iconic films such as Stardust and many of the Harry Potter films, Lacock exudes a sense of magic and timelessness. A stroll through its cobblestone streets, past its quaint cottages and historic buildings, makes for the perfect post-dinner walk.
