Your next neighbourhood spot: The Alma, Wandsworth

Tucked away in the leafy heart of Wandsworth, The Alma stands as a prime example of what a local pub should be: welcoming, characterful, and full of charm. Whether you’re stopping by for a laid-back drink, a relaxed dinner, or simply to soak in the neighbourhood vibe, this place delivers on all fronts. With its friendly atmosphere and inviting décor, The Alma feels like a proper local — the kind of spot you can return to again and again.

One of the highlights of the visit was the lovely outdoor terrace. It’s a perfect sun trap when the weather co-operates, and even on cooler evenings, there’s a gentle buzz of conversation. Nestled between leafy streets and with plenty of space, it’s a rare gem in this part of London — casual, comfortable, and ideal for a long lunch or drawn-out dinner. Ideally situated next to the tube also.

We started with two small plates. The Prawn Cocktail Brioche was a clever and delicious twist on a classic — plump, juicy prawns tucked into a soft, buttery roll with a light, tangy dressing that kept things fresh. It was comforting and indulgent in equal measure. The Chicken Caesar Croquettes were a hit too: crispy on the outside, warm and creamy within, they packed all the familiar flavours of a Caesar salad into a bite-sized treat. It’s not often you can say something playful and inventive like that actually works — but here, it really did.

For the main course, the fillet steak with chimichurri was cooked to perfection. The meat was tender, full of flavour, and the chimichurri added just the right amount of herby heat and zing to cut through the richness. A good steak is often about the little details — a proper sear, a rest at the right time, a sauce that doesn’t overwhelm — and this pub nailed it.

To finish things off, we went for the sticky toffee pudding, which was as rich and satisfying as you’d hope. Served warm with caramelised banana and ice cream, it was a proper comfort dish — sweet, sticky, and nostalgic, but elevated with thoughtful touches that made it stand out. The banana added a bit of texture and depth, and the ice cream brought it all together.

The drinks offering is equally strong. The wine list is well curated, with something for every taste — whether you’re after a bold red to pair with steak or something crisp and white to match seafood or small plates. There’s also a great selection of beers and cocktails, making it easy to settle in for an extended evening.

Service was friendly, attentive, and relaxed. Staff were knowledgeable about the menu, happy to offer recommendations. What really sets The Alma apart is how effortlessly it combines the comfort of a proper neighbourhood pub with the quality of a much more upscale dining experience. It’s refined without being stuffy, stylish without trying too hard, and full of thoughtful touches that reflect a team that really knows what it’s doing.
