Friday Nights at The Cavendish, Marylebone

For anyone searching for the perfect Friday night after-work spot, The Cavendish in Marylebone makes a compelling case. Particularly after a long week at work. It’s a place where you can shed the week, start with a well-made cocktail, and settle into an evening of food that manages to be indulgent, creative, and deeply satisfying.

The tone of the night is set at the bar. Cocktails here are confident and elegant, each one balanced with the kind of finesse that shows a real understanding of flavour. Classics come with a modern twist, while original signatures offer something new without feeling gimmicky. Alongside, the wine list offers breadth and intelligence, with bottles and by-the-glass options that match the kitchen’s style beautifully.

Starters set the stage for an impressive meal. An oyster dressed with honey and yuzu ponzu sauce opened proceedings with a dazzling interplay of salty, sweet, and citrus notes. The seared tuna arrived next, paired with fennel, dill, Granny Smith apple, lemon gel, and a soy-citrus emulsion. Perhaps the most indulgent of the first courses was the sole Cordon Bleu, reimagined with ham and Taleggio cheese, and finished with crème fraîche and herb oil. It was rich yet never heavy, offering a luxurious twist on a comfort-food classic.

Mains showed the same balance between elegance and generosity. The sautéed seafood was a joyful celebration of the ocean, clams, cockles, and mussels bubbling together in white wine, garlic, and a whisper of chilli, the whole dish lifted by the simple pleasure of crisp golden chips on the side. The duck breast, by contrast, leaned into depth and refinement: tender slices of meat paired with a cherry and lamb jus, fresh cherries, burnt baby onions, and a smooth sweetcorn cream.

Desserts brought the meal to a stylish close. The Black Forest cherry bon-bons were as fun as they were delicious – bite-sized spheres of frozen black cherry crémeux encased in dark chocolate and crowned with white chocolate ganache – served with a flourish from a mini treasure chest. They were indulgent but surprisingly light, the perfect sweet ending to share. The peach mousse was the fresher counterpoint: paired with white peach coulis, fresh basil, and black sesame crumble, it offered a light, fragrant, and subtly herbal finish to the evening.

What elevates The Cavendish beyond its food and drink is the atmosphere. The dining room has a comfortable buzz that works as well for date nights as it does for group dinners, while the service strikes just the right note of warmth and professionalism. The terrace is the perfect Marylebone spot to sit and people watch.

As a place to mark the end of the week, The Cavendish is spot on. Excellent cocktails, a thoughtful wine list, dishes that delight without overcomplicating, and a setting that makes you want to linger – this is Marylebone dining at its most enjoyable.
