The London Dungeon Review
I first took my dad to The London Dungeon in 2017 when he was visiting London. At that time Mrs Lovett wanted to make him into a pie, and I took the opportunity to chop off his head whilst he was in the stocks (a photo that sits in my living room). So I was excited to take him back 7 years later- though he was a little reluctant at having his head chopped off again.
Fortunately for him, it was someone else’s head about to be chopped off. In the new Rotten Royals show we head back 375 years to the reign of King Charles I. Here you’ll learn about how he was charged with high treason, his execution and the abolition of the monarchy for over a decade. Labelled a ‘tyrant, traitor, murderer and public enemy’, Charles I remains the only English King to be tried and executed to this day. But before this you’ll meet the executioner who is keen to practise his swing. Will you be lucky enough to make it out with your head?
Those brave enough to enter the London Dungeons will see, hear, feel and smell the city, and meet its famous characters such as Sweeney Todd and Jack the Ripper. You’ll end in 1783 where The Long Drop is being used for the first time. This vertical free drop ride is aptly named Drop Dead. Though we knew what to expect we still found it a fun ride.
The actors, costumes, make-up, sets and props are fabulous. Sweeney Todd’s barber shop is one of the highlights. Even though we knew what was coming it was very well done and still startled us. The mirror maze was clever and resulted in lots of laughs as we tried to find our way out.
Audience participation is key so our recommendation is get involved as much as you can- whether that’s booing others, standing in the docks accused of a crime or volunteering to have your head chopped off!
The entire experience lasted about 90minutes. Travelling through time can be hungry and thirsty work, so good job there’s The Tavern- The London Dungeon’s own British pub at the end of the experience.
Rotten Royals is at the London Dungeons from 13th July to 4th November. Tickets are available online from £30 (Adult) and from £24 (Child).
