The White Building

white1Do you have a moustache (be you man or woman)? Are your sunglasses on and the sun not out? Are your sentences charmingly vague?  Congratulations you’re a hipster and I’ve got a new place for you.

Like all hipster hangouts, Hackney Wick is dilapidated, once industrial, neglected, there is lots of colourful graffiti .. there is normally an old mill knocking about somewhere. At Hackney Wick there’s also ‘socially minded’ exhibition and art studio, a cafe using recycled wood blocks for furniture and a pub that feels more like a warehouse than Ye Olde.

The pub in question is The White Building.

I don’t know where they get these names I really don’t. It is a building and it is white so I assume they started from there and the ideas snowballed. To get into it is like wading through the wardrobe into Narnia – except instead of fur-coats there are moustaches.

It is Crate Brewery & Pizzeria – so if you like warm beer and thin stonebaked pizzas this is the place for you. I don’t really like warm beer but I do like stone-baked pizzas. I did like their beer more than I normally do though and the pizzas were excellent. There is an outside area with several benches opposite the river, check out this link.

white-buildingAll in all a really cool place. A good Sunday afternoon place. A certificated hipster hangout. What makes it a little nicer than the average hipster hangout is that it is a bit friendlier. The staff are the enthusiastic type of quirky rather than the shoe gazing variety. There are boho families there (I was concerned by the potential incessant pterodactyl shriek from the several prams but thankfully the little cherubs were quiet). Also, on leaving we were clapped at by a gang of arty stoners. I never get clapped. Anywhere that claps me is okay in by book.

SellickOr were they clapping because I was leaving? I knew I should have grown a moustache…

The Crate Brewery & Pizzeria is open 7 days a week, from breakfast to bedtime and the rest of the building opens for specific events. For details, click here
