Whaam Banh Mi Vietnamese in Soho

Tucked away on Great Windmill Street away from the madness that is Piccadilly is Whaam Banh Mi. London’s newest take on Vietnamese.

Whaam Banh Mi offers a rather interesting take on the good old English sarnie. Say goodbye to tuna & sweetcorn, egg & cress and all day brekkie, Whaam Banh Mi infuses Asian flavours into the likes of BBQ Shredded Pork (£6), Lemongrass Chicken (£6.50), Luc Lac Brisket (£6.50), Crispy Ginger & Chilli Tofu (£6), and Thai Fishcake (£6) bánh mìs.

Oh for all you guys who don’t know (I didn’t!) a Bánh Mì is ‘a Vietnamese specialty bread which is synonymous with a particular type of sandwich which generally includes pâté, sliced cucumber, pickled vegetables, chilli, coriander and a protein filling.’ YUMMY!

We tried the both the slow cooked beef topped with chilli and hot sauce; and the crispy tofu smothered in chilli and lemon mayo. These were accompanied by vegetarian rice spring rolls with a chilli dipping sauce.

The restaurant is designed to transport customers to Vietnam and you rock up to the bánh mì counter to order and collect your food, and it’s a take out kinda place, so we took our ‘gluten free’ boxes to Leicester Square, plonked down on the grass and had a lovely chomp.

Wow what a take on a sandwich! The beef was slow cooked and super tender. A little sweet and spicy with the chilli it really invigorated your tastebuds! The tofu was crunchy, and the lemon mayo really added a nice citrus flavour. The spring rolls were a nice meal compliment instead of conventional crisps or fries that come with sandwiches.

Overall if you are looking for a filling lunch try the new Bánh Mì’s in Soho for something just that little bit different and support some independent guys!
