A Taste of France in the Heart of Chippenham: Lunch at The Kitchen by Wine Monkey
There’s a new culinary destination in Chippenham that’s already winning hearts – The Kitchen by Wine Monkey. Tucked next to its sister wine bar and bottle shop in Borough Parade, this artisan deli and French-inspired bistro offers a fresh and welcoming dining experience that celebrates good food, good wine, and relaxed hospitality.
On a recent visit, we enjoyed a leisurely lunch in the sun that honestly transported us to Cannes – it perfectly captured the spirit of The Kitchen: honest, seasonal ingredients, simply and beautifully prepared. We enjoyed a comforting classic – a warm slice of quiche, its flaky, buttery pastry giving way to a rich, creamy filling. Paired with crisp, garden-fresh salads on the side, it made for a perfectly balanced and flavourful start.
The standout of the meal, however, was the chicken — tender, perfectly roasted, and served with an assortment of vibrant salad sides. Each element on the plate complemented the next: lightly dressed greens, earthy grains, and fresh herbs working together to create something much greater than the sum of its parts. It’s this attention to detail and balance that sets The Kitchen apart.
No less impressive was the wine. Curated by the Wine Monkey team, the selection leans towards sustainable, craft bottles – and the glasses we enjoyed was nothing short of exceptional. Fragrant, expressive, and a perfect match to the food, it elevated the meal from lovely to unforgettable. Whether you’re a wine connoisseur or simply enjoy a great glass, the team’s deep knowledge and warm guidance make choosing the right pour a pleasure.
The space itself is relaxed and stylish, with the feel of a local bistro you might stumble upon in a quiet corner of Provence. It’s the sort of place where you could just as easily pop in for a coffee and pastry from the adjoining Coffee Gems bar as settle in for a long, luxurious lunch. Head chef and co-owner Lisa Gale has succeeded in creating a space that feels genuinely welcoming – a neighbourhood spot with real soul.
Open on weekdays for laid-back lunches and weekends for leisurely brunch, The Kitchen is more than just a new place to eat – it’s quickly becoming a central part of Chippenham’s food and drink scene. For anyone seeking thoughtfully prepared food in a warm, unpretentious setting, this is a place worth discovering.
