Sakagura Review

Japanese food is wholeheartedly my favourite cuisine, thankfully we are very spoilt in London and you can find Japanese restaurants all over town. However, which one would you walk into and happily hand over your hard-earned cash for a good meal? I can name a few, but one of the Japanese restaurants I hadn’t been to was Sakagura. Last month Sakagura celebrated their first anniversary on Mayfair’s Heddon street by launching a new Izakaya style menu. The perfect excuse to dine at Sakagura.

We headed on down to Sakagura last week to give the new menu a go and got a nice warm welcome when we arrived. The decor as a real contemporary Japanese feel to it, low lighting, rich wooden tables, wooden curved stylish chairs with Japanese finishing.

The menu consists of small and large plates, we opted for a collection of small plates, and very affordable I may add, with the salmon sushi coming in at only £5.50 for a plate.

The tuna and salmon sashimi were delivered in a bowl of ice, with a nice garish, definitely 10 out of 10 for presentation. They both tasted incredibly fresh, and it was a little melt in your both experience, which admittedly I thought you could only experience with chocolate dessert… well Sakagura has certainly taught me something new.

I’m a huge pan fried dumpling fan so when I saw the pork gyoza, of course I ordered two plates… They didn’t disappoint. A quality plate of hot gyoza bursting with flavour, with my name written all over it!

The chicken yakitori was a firm favourite on the day, the chicken was marinated well and tasted delicious. If larger plates are more your thing, you can choose from fresh salmon and vegetable poke bowls, assorted donburi rice bowls or gozen bento sets. Complement your chosen dishes with a wide selection of sake and cocktails that Sakagura has on offer, if that doesn’t tickle your fancy, they also offer a variety of Japanese whisky, beers and wine.

The service is top notch. The staff were welcoming from the moment we walked through the door and our waitress was friendly and very helpful in going through her recommended dishes. The best seats in the house are the booths, ideal for a night out with a group of friends or with your special other half.

Sakagura serves fresh authentic Japanese food without the pretentious price tag.
