Town House Kensington

A Sunday in South Kensington almost plans itself. Start with a wander through world-class museums, take in a gallery or two, and then – when you’re ready to rest your lower back – settle in somewhere that feels a little more special. That’s exactly where Town House Kensington comes in.

Set just a short stroll from cultural heavyweights like the Natural History Museum, the Victoria & Albert Museum, and the Science Museum, it’s perfectly placed for making a full day of it. I visited with my dad and his partner, and it turned out to be the ideal way to round off a museum-filled afternoon.

The space itself makes an immediate impression. It’s elegant without feeling pretentious – light-filled, beautifully decorated, and just the right level of “fancy” for a relaxed but still special Sunday lunch. My dad and his partner both commented on how pretty it was, which is always a good sign.

We started with a mix of dishes that set the tone nicely. The dressed Dorset crab was fresh and delicate, exactly what you’d hope for, while the British burrata with heritage tomatoes, pesto, and focaccia crostini was a real crowd-pleaser – creamy, vibrant, and full of flavour. The soup of the day, a roasted cauliflower, was comforting and nicely balanced, especially on a cooler day.

But the real highlight here is the Sunday roast, and it’s done properly. We went all in and ordered all three options: grass-fed sirloin beef, corn-fed chicken crown, and Blythburgh roast pork belly. What makes it stand out is the way it’s served: brought to the table on a large sharing board, encouraging everyone to dig in and try a bit of everything. It’s generous, relaxed, and feels far more communal than the usual plated approach.

Each of the meats held its own. The beef was tender and full of flavour, the chicken juicy with crisp skin, and the pork belly rich with that all-important crackling. Alongside came towering Yorkshire puddings, seasonal vegetables, and what might have been the highlight for some, bottomless roast potatoes. Crispy on the outside, fluffy inside, and constantly replenished, they were impossible to resist.

If there was one thing missing, it would be a cauliflower cheese -but that’s a small note in what was otherwise a very satisfying spread.

By the time we’d worked our way through everything, dessert was a step too far. Instead, we lingered over drinks, which turned out to be a great decision. The wine list is well curated, and the cocktails are just as strong – my Paloma in particular was excellent, fresh and perfectly balanced.

Town House Kensington feels elevated enough for a special occasion, but relaxed enough to enjoy with family on a Sunday. Add in its location, surrounded by some of London’s best museums, and it’s an easy choice for turning a simple lunch into a full, well-spent day. There’s also a wonderful afternoon tea if a Sunday Roast isn’t your cup of tea.
