Mater1a: The Notting Hill Tasting Menu That’s Perfect for a First Date

There’s a restaurant on Westbourne Grove so unassuming you could walk straight past it without a second glance – in fact I did, twice – and yet, once inside, it delivers one of the most special dining experiences London has to offer right now. Mater1a is fast becoming my go-to recommendation for a first date that really impresses.

The restaurant is chef Victor Garvey’s most personal project to date. Following the Michelin-starred success of SO|LA, Mater1a – short for “Materia Prima,” meaning raw material – is a love letter to ingredients themselves, built around a cosy dining space. Head Chef Kaming Pang, previously sous chef at SO|LA, leads the kitchen alongside Garvey, and the knowledge on display is genuinely staggering. Every dish comes with a story – where the ingredient is from, why it’s been treated a certain way, what it’s meant to evoke – delivered with the kind of quiet confidence that only comes from total command of your craft.

The menu itself reads more like poetry than a traditional list of dishes. “June, In 5 Bites” opens proceedings, followed by a run of exceptional courses: Marinda Tomato with Sakura Miso and Haru; Mr Tanaka’s Tuna with Leek and Elderflower; an Amadai with Ikura and Langoustine that balances delicacy and depth perfectly. The XXL Dayboat Scallop, served with Oxidized Wine, Fig Leaf and Caviar, was a particular standout – bold, briny and beautifully composed. New Zealand’s Abalone with Smoked Yukon Gold, Truffle and Hon Shimeji showed real technical restraint, while the A5 Kobe Wagyu with Morel and Saikyo Miso was, unsurprisingly, a showstopper. To close, Yamagata Cherry arrives under the playful heading “Nature vs Nurture” – a fitting, thoughtful finish to a menu that never once takes itself too seriously despite the seriousness of the cooking behind it.

At £214.00 for the full menu, with a Wine & Sake Pairing available for £165, this isn’t a casual Tuesday dinner. But it is an experience – intimate, immersive and genuinely conversation-starting, which is exactly why it works so well for a first date with someone you deeply want to marry. The tiny room, the open counter: it all builds a kind of shared adventure that takes the pressure off small talk and gives you something to actually discuss course by course.
