American Idiot - ON IN LONDON

Greenday’s American Idiot transports you to post 9/11 America in this fantastic award winning Punk Rock Opera/Musical. The Arts Theatre provides an intimate venue for viewers to follow the lives and loves of three disaffected young men, Johnny, Will, and Tunny. Newton Faulkner shines as Johnny and provides a heart wrenching interpretation of a man who has let drugs lead him down a downward spiral. The other two main leads Alexis Gerred and Steve Rushton also provide stirring performances as they sing their way through Green Day’s American Idiot album. Alexis Gerred’s singing Before The Lobotomy as Tunny is especially moving. The highlight of this show for me has to be Lucas Rush’s performance as St Jimmy. He really does steal every scene upon his entrance, which is exceptionally hard to do when the whole show is full of talented actresses and actors.

The only disappointment was that given the small venue, the band sometimes over powered the singers. Despite this, throughout the entire show the energy of the performances on stage were magnetising. The cast expertly execute the choreography of Director and Choreographer, Racky Plews. For such an intimate venue, Racky Plews has managed to make the most of the stage and really draw viewers into the punk rock fuelled world that was early 2000’s.

From the 8^th of July until the 25^th of September 2016, Green Day’s Tony Award ® winning musical, American Idiot will continue to perform at the Arts Theatre. Make sure you head along to experience hit songs including “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” “21 Guns,” “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” “Holiday” and the blockbuster title track “American Idiot” from Green Day’s 2004 Grammy Award-winning, multi-platinum album in all their glory. I know I haven’t been able to get the soundtrack out of my head since I’ve seen the show, I’m sure you’ll be the same.
