Ayurveda Pura Spa Review

I spend a lot of time on my computer working and sometimes two hours can pass, until I realise I haven’t moved my body. In the last month I have gotten bad lower back pain, which no doubt sitting at my computer has definitely contributed too. So when I heard about the Kati Basti massage from Ayurveda Pura, I had to give it a go. The Kati Basti massage is a unique warm oil treatment for the lower back which can be helpful in treating all lower back ailments including acute and chronic pain, nerve disorders and sciatica.

Ayurveda Pura is situated in Greenwich, not far from North Greenwich station, which is great for me being based in East London. I got a nice, warm welcome when I arrived and was then given a form to fill out, to find out what body type I have which would determine the best approach to use for my treatment.

With Ayurveda, they believe we as humans are to be composed of five basic elements: space, air, fire, water and earth. These five elements in turn combine with each other to give rise to three Doshas: Vata (air and space), Pitta (fire and water) and Kapha (water and earth).

I found out I was pitta, one of the founders, Dr Deepa Apte explained to me what this meant and what to expect in the treatment room. I shared my concerns about my lower back pain with Dr Deepa Apte. who kindly gave me advice on back exercises and explained the importance of movement when working at a computer.

Ayurvedic massage differs from a Swedish massage, instead of working on the muscles, the body is stroked in warm herb infused Ayurvedic oils. For my lower back, they created a circular well which sat on top of the pain on my back, where the warm oil was poured into. My therapist was amazing and knew exactly how to massage and release the tension I was holding. The oils used were very relaxing and calming. When the treatment was done, I had a shower, got dressed and headed to the reception. I was offered a nice cup of herbal tea and discussed with Dr Deepa Apte on how I felt after the treatment. I was amazed that 90% of my lower back pain disappeared after the massage, and my body felt light. I had a smile on my face from being virtually pain-free and my first question when I surfaced was what other treatments were available, as no doubt I was coming back.

The price for the Kati Basti massage was £62, which was very very reasonable, I have paid a lot more money for just a Swedish massage, that to be honest hasn’t been that good. This spa is a real hidden treasure, the doctor and staff are all passionate and they genuinely want to help. This isn’t just about an exchange of money for a service. I felt well looked after throughout my treatment and I honestly cannot wait to book my next treatment.
