Brook Green: Wild Food Market

VegetablesShop, eat and learn a thing or two at Brook Green Wild Food Market

Brook Green Wild Food Market http://thewildfoodmarket.flavors.me/#our-market is a vibrant and interactive new famers’ market found at Addison Primary School, W14 0DT every Saturday from 10am till 3pm.

But this is no ordinary weekend farmers’ market, folks. Organiser Pushpal Dhawan is committed to making this particular farmers’ market a fun and exciting place for families to come to not only shop, but to eat and learn as well – a Saturday event in itself.

Londoners are already flocking from all over to hone their food and beverage know-how by taking part in the market’s popular cooking demonstrations, and attending tastings and talks delivered by an assortment of chefs and led by head Chef Matt Young. All ingredients used in demos are taken from the market that very day, so spectators can go straight home and try the recipes out for themselves.

Background

Pushpal explains that he wants the market to offer families, groups of friends and individuals a food and drinks hub in West London, and something a little different to do on a Saturday. His experience in the food industry discovered a lack of good markets of this sort in West London, with the East End claiming the lion’s share of innovative and fun, community based street food events thus far:

“It was all about bringing quality food to the street, which had to be executed to the highest standard.  People were really into healthy food as well, organic and free range was all the rage and quite rightly so.”

With five-year waiting lists for a pitch at the popular Portobello Market, Pushpal had to think outside the box and approached several locations in West London with his proposal, and soon Addison Primary School showed interest in his vision.

His dream is for Brook Green Wild Food Market to become a platform for all manner of interesting food and drink retailers, artisans and cooks to showcase their trade at the market. Plans are also afoot for a Brook Green cookery school, foraging trips and pop up restaurants across the capital.  But it doesn’t end there – Pushpal wants to spread the Wild Food message far and wide, from workshops showing people how to grow herbs in window boxes to publishing a book about the evolution of this community market.
