OIL Reviews Masakali

On entry, Masakali is a refreshing and confident addition to Euston’s vibrant ‘Little India’ as I like to call it, offering a modern take on rich flavours without losing sight of the tradition and heritage that this cuisine is known for. Situated between Euston and Fitzrovia, the restaurant immediately feels lively and welcoming, striking a balance between vibrant interiors and relaxed comfort.

The warm welcome is one of Masakali’s strongest assets. We sat on a table near the entrance, which was a bit drafty, and were immediately moved when they caught our slight shiver. There’s a noticeable buzz in the room, but it never feels overwhelming. Instead, it creates a sense of celebration – a fitting reflection of the restaurant’s name, which evokes movement, joy and expression.

Food is clearly the main focus, and the menu showcases Indian cuisine with both respect and creativity. Rather than simply replicating same-same Indian dishes, Masakali adds subtle twists that elevate them. Starters are bold and flavourful, often combining contrasting textures and spices that keep each bite interesting. The use of seasoning is confident but controlled, allowing the ingredients to shine without overpowering the palate. I really enjoyed the Coconut-Coated Chicken Fry, which was fragrant and tender.

The main courses continue this approach. Rich, slow-cooked dishes sit alongside lighter options, offering something for a wide range of tastes. The curries are deeply aromatic and comforting, with sauces that feel carefully layered rather than heavy. Portions are generous without being excessive, making the meal satisfying yet balanced. Vegetarian dishes are given just as much attention as meat options, which is always a welcome sign of a well-considered menu. Don’t skip the Goan Prawn Curry which was a hot and tasty highlight.

Masakali’s drinks menu adds another layer to the experience. The cocktails are subtle twists on classics, which perfectly suit the diverse and more complex menu. I particularly enjoyed their version of a Long Island Iced Tea.

Service at Masakali is super warm and attentive. Staff are knowledgeable about the menu and happy to offer recommendations, which is particularly helpful if you’re unfamiliar with certain dishes. The overall feeling is one of genuine hospitality – relaxed, friendly and professional.

Masakali stands out for its combination of atmosphere, flavour and creativity – which is impressive considering the number of historic and well-established Indian spots in the area. It respects the roots of Indian cuisine while presenting it in a contemporary, approachable way. Whether you’re a long-time lover of Indian food or simply looking to try something new, Masakali is a place that leaves a lasting impression and invites you back for more.
