We were quickly greeted by friendly staff, and led through the pub into the back garden, where a tent was set up reminiscent of ‘the Great British Bake Off.’ However, the workstations were laid with whole pheasants, huge pieces of yet-to-be-carved meat, and a plethora of seasonal vegetables. What followed was a fairly hands-on butchery masterclass, in which we had the opportunity to pluck our birds, and learnt a lot about the food that the Young’s Pub group served. The chefs were very helpful, allowing you to take part to the extent that you felt comfortable with, and sharing their impressive knowledge of where the food had been sourced.
Once the masterclass had finished, we were led back into the pub, where we were greeted with beautifully set tables and a warm and relaxed atmosphere. We then embarked on a fantastic wine-paired dinner, featuring partridge terrine, dry aged rib of beef, and bay leaf custard tart. The menu paired beautifully with the wines, and as we began each course we had the chance to learn a little about each wine and how to taste it properly. The meal was truly wonderful, and lots of care was clearly put into each detail.
Overall, it was the passion for local sustainable food that struck me most about the experience, and the masterclass gave us a respect for the food that is uncommon in most dining experiences. The night felt very relaxed, warm and fun, and was the perfect way to spend an autumn evening.
