REVIEW: Elk In The Woods

If you haven’t walked down the cobbled street of Camden Passage before, its one of those places that when you stumble across it, you feel like you have come across a secret local London hot spot. You’ll find the trendiest eateries and vintage shops, but your find yourself asking “where is the best place to dine?”

Elk In The Woods is one of those word-of-mouth places, that brings in a regular crowd and after dining here we can certainly see why. Their brunch menu is a popular choice, however this time round we went in for lunch. The menu consisted of an all day brunch (for those who can’t resist), small dishes to share and main meals. I choose the Danish Hakkebof, firstly because it caught my eye and secondly it was the manager’s recommended choice (and you can’t argue with that…). The Danish Hakkebof (which I can describe as big sized meatball) came in beef gravy, roast bacon wrapped potatoes, served with a dollop of herb and caper sour cream. Meat lovers, this one is for you, the Hakkebof was meaty, juicy and nice and tender and the bacon wrapped potatoes was a nice touch.

Yes there are some great meat dishes on the menu like the very popular Danish Frikadweller, but the Elk In The Woods also caters for vegetarians, my friend opted for the Veggie board: grilled English goats cheese dusted in ash served fig, pine nut and olive tapenade, beetroot carpaccio with sorrel cream served with ciabatta dippers, hummus with smoked paprika and watercress salad. First wowzers, it was a nice big sized veggie board to tuck into and also 10 out of 10 for presentation! All ingredients were fresh and have been sourced locally where possible, which is a thumbs up from us.

I can honestly say when spotting sticky toffee pudding on the desert menu it always makes my eyes light up, it didn’t disappoint, it wasn’t overly sweet and it was baked to perfection. My friend choose the homemade popcorn ice cream sandwich with salted caramel, presentation wise once again caught our attention and it hit her sweet spot.

Elk in the wood has a nice wooden interior with a cosy feel to it, the staff were friendly and welcoming, I can certainly see why they have regulars, I would advise booking in advance on weekends to avoid waiting up to an hour for a table. It’s popular for a reason, don’t say we never warned you…

Those who fancy just drinks? you can also head on over for coffee or wine and cocktails in the evening.
