Review: Shake Shack Yard Burger
When I heard Shake Shack UK was kicking off summer with a limited edition Yard Burger which featured 100% Aberdeen Angus beef topped with Neal’s Yard Colston Basset Stilton and house-made pickled red onions. I knew I wanted in. Of course, I’m not the hugest fan of anything pickled or involving onions but you had me at Blue Cheese and an Angus beef burger. I hadn’t been to Shake Shack before so I was excited to head down to try the new burger, their shakes and ‘a cup of concrete’.
Upon arriving at Shack’s Covent Garden Store, it was easy to see the restaurant is popular. Nearly every seat was taken with people enjoying their burgers, fries and shakes. Luckily we managed to grab a table to enjoy our meal. Ordering a Strawberry Cheesecake Shake for myself and a Vanilla Shake for my friend while we waited for our Yard Burgers. Omg these shakes are divine. The Strawberry Cheesecake one actually tasted like its namesake and was so creamy. It’s one of their limited edition flavours which is released each week. My friend declared that her Vanilla Shake was the best in London and swore she could taste white chocolate in her drink. The secret to these shakes, is that they are made with frozen custard ice-cream which is made fresh in the store on a daily basis.
While we were enjoying our shakes, our burgers arrived. Given our busy the store was I was quite impressed it was only a 10 minute wait for our order. I must admit I picked off my pickled onions but the flavours left on the burger still lingered and it was tasty. Wow I don’t think I have ever eaten a burger this fast. I swear it was devoured in three or four bites. The Angus Beef patty was so tender, juicy and full of flavour that there’s no way I could have slowed down. Plus that the Stilton Cheese from Neal’s Yard Dairy, words cannot describe. My friend ate her burger (including the pickled onions) equally as fast and her comments were similar to mine. Now the fries are equally good. Go the Cheesy Fries if you’re going to go all out. You won’t regret it.
At this stage we were feeling incredibly stuffed but couldn’t resist taking a cup of concrete and a cone to take away. This frozen custard ice-cream is amazing. Seriously it’s better than any gelato or ice-cream I’ve ever had. I chose the Drury Lane Jam (Vanilla Custard, local strawberry jam, St. John Bakery brown sugar biscuit and fresh banana), while my friend chose a Vanilla Custard cone. Both of these were perfect for our warm start to summer.
As we were leaving the Shake Shack in Covent Garden, we noticed the line was out the door and didn’t look like it would slow down anytime soon. Don’t let this discourage you if you’re craving one of the best burgers and shakes in London. It’s well worth the wait. The Yard burger will be available at all UK Shake Shacks from Wednesday 1st of June until 17th of July and is priced at £7.50 single/£10.50 double.
