Rudies Super Jerk Dalston

When you step into Rudies you would be forgiven for thinking you walked into a Mayfair restaurant with polished wooden furnishings, a smart panelled bar and symmetrical lines. However this place has soul hidden in the food which makes this contrasting pairing rather interesting.

We chatted to Michelle who owns the restaurant with her hubby. She explained how the restaurant idea had formed back in Jamaica and they had always dreamed of opening one over here. They wanted to bring real home cooked Jamaican food over the water, back to the roots, and spent time scouring the country for the finest food and drink.

When we visited the family were ready for home after a long day, it was lovely to see them all so comfortable in a bustling London restaurant. However Michelle was kind enough to advise on a few menu choices for us and then left us in the capable hands of her staff.

Armed with some Governor General (rum, orange curacao, dry vermouth and sorrel) cocktails and plantain crisps we set out on our ‘Super Jerk’ adventure.

First stop, Jerk Calamari with Coriander and Lime dip (£7.50). The calamari was soft but not chewy (hooray) with a thick and crispy batter. The dip was fruity and sweet which matched the salty fish. I have to admit we ended up ordering another of this lovely dish!

Then we tasted round little bundles of Ackee and Saltfish bakes (£7.50). Again a great salty vs sweet tastebud tantalizer.

The next stop was Peppa Shrimp over Baby Spinach (£9.75) which blew my brain! I thought I would be rather clever and take a large bite of saucy spinach. Wow! A spicy sensation for all involved. One for keen hot heads.

Lastly we selected a Vegetable Patty. The golden flaky pastry was filled with a warming spiced vegetable mix. Subtle and lovely.

Then dessert. There is always room for dessert. We shared a Rum cake with Rum Caramel sauce and Ice Cream (£6.75) and a Banana Brulee (£6.50). Ahhh the rum cake was sweet and boozy, utterly lovely. I had never tried a banana brulee, and it was an original take on an old dessert!

Rudies showcases Jamaican cuisine right from the heart. With a spice level to suit every palate (there were several dips of varying heat!) check out Rudies for a contemporary twist on old school cooking.
