Venetian Experience by the Thames

Terrazza on the Thames - pop up @ Columbia Docklands10

Terrazza on the Thames, a waterfront terrace pop up where old meets new with the impressive backdrop of the old Victorian industrial façade of Colombia Wharf and the spectacular views of the Thames and modern city skyline beyond.

The Terrazza on the Thames evokes sophistication with its primarily black and gold contemporary décor.  The simple abstract interpretation of Venice is tastefully executed; perched at the entrance to two large U shaped booths are large gold Ferro styled structures, designed to make you feel as though you are seated in a gondola. Smaller booths have a pop of colour from sea blue scatter cushions, high bar tables and stools are situated under canopies, whilst tall pyramid heaters stand beside each seating area with an array of black candle lanterns. Topiary trees and greenery in black planters add a nice visual contrast. Its understated elegance that works towards creating a relaxed and welcoming outdoors experience.

The drinks menu features a nice variety of wines, bubbles and cocktails with Bolla Prosecco as the main ingredient. My companion went for the classic Bellini, whilst my penchant for rum drew me to the Campanile. I’m not a great fan of sparkly wine but I couldn’t resist a sip of the Bellini as the sunset colour of the peach puree looked way too tempting. It was light and refreshing, a slight crispness complimented by the fruit puree. The combination of sweet sour flavours in my Campanile was tantalising, the homemade fig syrup gave a nice sweetness against the acidity of the lemon, with the full flavour of the Havana club rum coming through.

We opted for a selection of Cicchetti style appetizers, which included the Anti Pasti platter, Arancini and Polenta Chips. The food is simple but executed well and the artisan presentation is lovely and colourful, delicately arranged on wooden boards and in small white bowls. The portions are adequate for 2 people sharing.

The anti pasti platter offers a nice range of flavours and textures; the Pesto dip accompaniment was fresh, creamy and well seasoned. The polenta chips were cooked to perfection, firm and crispy on the outside with a soft and creamy consistency on the inside, which melted in the mouth. The flavours from the accompanying salsa verde and garlic mascarpone dip proved complimentary. They are incredibly moreish and my dining companion gave them the thumbs up, high praise from someone who has 25 years’ experience in catering business Inc. fine dining.

The Arancini balls although they didn’t have the familiar melted cheese centre, were of a generous size with a crunchy outer shell and a lovely texture within. The Arrabiata accompaniment had a pleasant sweet savoury kick.

From the three choices of Pizzette (mini pizzas) we selected The Dock – a meaty pizza and a Classic Florita. Served on wooden boards, I expected to see ‘shredded’ pieces of pork on the ‘The Dock’ but it appeared to be chopped rather than ‘pulled’, nether less the pepperoni and salami was plentiful. The egg on my Florita was well done whereas I would have preferred the yolk to have slight runny consistency, however it was flavoursome and the Parmesan added a nice sharpness. The pizza crusts were light and soft textured.

To balance out the carbs, we ordered a portion of Zuper Salad. It took a while to come and we had to prompt the waiter, but when it did arrive it was a good size portion, colourful and a nice combination of flavours and textures.  The squash was cooked well with a lovely smooth buttery flavour that complimented the subtle aniseed flavour of the fennel. The citrusy dressing added some tang but was not overpowering. The avocado was however a tad under ripe.

As the evening progressed it became slightly chilly, the patio heaters were lit creating a warming ambiance; soulful house music playing in the background added to a nice relaxing vibe. We relaxed in our booth watching the party boats pass by, contemplating on what it would be like to live in one of the riverside apartments. To overcome my envy, I ordered another moreish Campanile.

However although I found the staff to be friendly and personable, in particular Ken, the service in general needs to be more on point and staff a little more attentive, particularly as this was not a busy evening.

If you fancy something sweet or savoury to end your meal while sipping on another Prosecco, you can avail yourself of their two sweet options, four mini cones or a cheese board.

Overall it was a lovely way to spend an early afternoon in a beautiful harmonious setting. The food is uncomplicated and compliments the theme.   I can imagine it being a hotspot during summer, particularly in the late evening when you can bask in the glow of the lanterns and heaters against the lit city skyline. Take the short ferry ride from Canary Wharf Pier and prepare yourself for the experience ahead.
