Mestizo Review

I have a confession to make, I haven’t stopped raving about Mestizo since I visited there for the one year birthday of their market place. (Read about that experience here). So you can just imagine my excitement about visiting the restaurant to have a fully authentic Mexican menu.

We sat down ready to devour the entire menu, totally unsure of what to order. Luckily staff were willing to help us by suggesting the most popular dishes. While waiting for our food we enjoyed some delicious margaritas. The Lily Margarita and Guavarita Margarita were absoliutely delicous and it really is no surprise that Mestizo know how to make margaritas. They have over 300 tequilas in the resturant and over 40 different margaritas available to order. You definitely won’t have trouble finding something to suit everyone’s taste here.

A selection of four Empanadas was our first starters. I knew I already loved these as I’d tried them at Mestizo’s birthday celebrations… so it was no surprise these went down a treat. The cheese and potato ones were certainly our favourites. Our second starter was the Flautas – 4 rolled corn tortillas with chicken deep fried then topped with shredded lettuce, a tomatillo salsa, sour cream and scattered with queso fresco ranchero. Now if it hadn’t been for our gorgeous host, I wouldn’t have thought to order these. They were divine.

It was the main of Molcajete ‘Mestizo’  which is the specialty of the house that really cemented for me that Mestizo is the best Mexican restaurant in London. The combination of chicken and beef served in a volcanic stone bowl with cheese, chorizo, grilled spring onions, cilantro and avocado with a choice of salsa roja, tomatillo, mole or chipotle chili and 4 warmed corn or flour tortilas was just WOW. So full of flavour and autheniticity, I couldn’t stop eating. Given the serving size though we had to take left overs home as we would have rolled out of Mestizo for sure. The dish is served for 2 or more at £14.00 per person. I can’t wait to go back and share this dish again soon!

We finished with the Pineapple Margarita and the Pomegranate Margarita to wash down our delicious dinner before our dessert came. By this stage though, we were so full we had to share the Crepes De Cajeta. A deliciously thin crepe swimming in a to-die-for caramel sauce, chopped walnuts and ice-cream. It was the perfect way to end an extremely enjoyable meal.

Mestizo is seriously the place to visit. Ever since I told my friends that I’ve visited, they’ve been excited that I finally discovered the restaurant. I’ve even been told stories about when their friends visit from all over UK, they HAVE to meet here for food. So if that is the case – you know it’s the place to be! Hurry up and book your table now. You won’t regret it.
