A Hearty British Sunday Lunch in a Classic Central London Pub

The Coach Makers Arms, Marylebone Village

It’s that time of year. Christmas shopping is upon us, and many brave souls will board the stifling central line and head to Oxford Circus to battle it out for the top festive gifts. It’s a lot, and after all that hard work and stress, it’s the perfect time to visit a classic British pub.

Whilst many will flock to the safety of Soho or Carnaby to find an ice cold pint, my personal preference is to walk a few extra minutes to the beautiful suburb of Marylebone Village. Not only are the streets quintessentially British, but the smaller one-off boutiques are treasure troves for gifts. But enough about Christmas shopping.

Nestled on the corner of Bentinck Street and Marylebone Lane, you will find The Coach Makers Arms – a gorgeous and dim lit pub. Whilst the downstairs is always buzzy and busy, fortunate punters who book a table on a Sunday can head upstairs to the cosy dining room and enjoy one of London’s best roast dinners.

With a comfortable living room-style feel, talented mixologists are on hand to mix up a wicked cocktail – we’d always suggest a Bloody Mary or Dirty Martini to accompany a Sunday roast. As well as cocktails, there’s a robust wine list and beers, spirits and soft drinks.

Onto the main event, the food. The menu boasts a range of Oysters, snacks and small plates. To start, we feasted on some very fresh oysters with shallot mignonette – classic style. There was also an option of bone marrow crumb-topped oysters for the more adventurous. Other options include Jerusalem Artichoke Fritters with truffled aioli and Sticky Chicken Wings.

Starters span the classics such as Prawn Cocktail with avocado and Marie Rose and a Wild Mushroom Parfait served with beetroot relish and Yorkshire pudding. A word of warning here, the roasts are very generously portioned, so you may want to opt out of a starter – especially if you’re more of a pudding fan.

The roast menu was large and included all options such as Chicken with bread sauce; Pork Belly with spiced quince; Angus Beef Rump with horseradish crème fraiche; Lamb Rump with mint sauce, or the ultimate option; a mix of Beef, Lamb and Belly Pork. I opted for the latter to get a true sense of the meal and all meats were tender and delicious, but the beef was a real highlight. Served with all the trimmings including roast potatoes, root vegetable mash, roast carrots, winter greens, parsnips and Yorkshire pudding, each element of the dinner was tasty and well seasoned. A truly good roast.

For those who aren’t a fan of the Sunday roast, there are a range of large plates to choose from also, including a CH Cheeseburger with sugar put bacon rib, beetroot relish and aioli; Battered Haddock and chips with mushy peas and tartare sauce and a Lentil & Celeriac Pie.

A warm and inviting atmosphere, it’s the perfect spot to relax above the hubbub of crazy London shoppers on a Sunday and to watch the day roll into the evening. After dinner, guests can retire to the busy pub below where the atmosphere is always pretty electric. There is also a wonderful private room for hire underground which has tunnelled ceilings and the option to have a DJ and private bar – a well hidden spot for birthday parties or work Christmas parties.
