Ask For Janice: Breakfast at its Best

Drip drip drop little April showers. A mashusive understatement for last Wednesday morning when I went to meet a friend down in Farringdon’s Ask For Janice. Luckily my jolly friend, the sparkly staff and awesome food made up for the hangry wet person who traipsed in that morning.

Greeted with a smile we were presented with a gorgeous brekkie menu. From Long Lane granola, berries, London honey and yoghurt and Fresh crumpets with butter and house jams, to Suffolk quinoa, coconut yoghurt and mint and Eggy bread, smoked tomatoes with baby leeks and bacon. Two options stood out for us: buttermilk pancakes with pineapple and ricotta and Baked Yorkshire rhubarb and stem ginger brown rice pudding.

The Urban Leisure Group pride themselves on top notch nosh, with a strong focus on sustainability, seasonality and quality. Ask for Janice (one of their children) is no exception, from house cured treacle bacon to locally foraged greens.

Safe in this knowledge, and armed with an English breakfast tea and a latte, we caught up while drooling in anticipation of our breakfast.

A sip and a slurp later the lovely waitress bought over our brekkie, and what a lovely sight it was. Thick and creamy brown rice pudding topped ginger and hazelnuts, teamed with a teenie tiny bottle of milk to add to taste. A juicy pair of pancakes embedded with pineapple and oozy ricotta, topped artfully with coconut shavings.

Both tasted as good as they looked. The rice pudding was rich, nutty and had a great ‘bite’ to it. The dollop of rhubarb compote on top added a great heat and fruity tang.

Out pancakes were divine. Soft and fluffy with the sweet pineapple cutting through the creamy ricotta. Delish.

And for breakfast pudding (totally a thing) I warmed up with a cosy rich hot chocolate.

A perfect start to a rainy midweek day. Ask for Janice offers impeccable service, well thought out tasty food and a friendly shabby chic vibe. An awesome retreat in the manic city any time of day.
