The Easy Way to Refresh Your Flat This Season? Start With Plants

There’s something about a new season that makes you want to reset your space. Whether it’s swapping heavy textures for lighter touches, opening the windows a little more often, or finally giving your neglected corners some attention, refreshing your flat doesn’t always require a full redesign. Sometimes, the simplest change can make the biggest impact, and for me, that started with plants.

I recently introduced two new additions from Bloom & Wild into my flat: an Olive Tree and a Peacock Calathea, and both have completely transformed the atmosphere of the space in very different ways.

The Olive Tree instantly brought warmth and softness into my living room. There’s something timeless and calming about its silvery-green leaves that makes a room feel more relaxed and elevated without trying too hard. It adds that effortless Mediterranean-inspired aesthetic that instantly makes a home feel brighter and more curated.

Lucy Hook, Plant Expert at Bloom & Wild, explains why Olive Trees work so beautifully indoors:

“The Olive Tree is one of my favourite ways to bring a touch of Mediterranean calm and effortless style to a room. They are true sun-worshippers, so the secret is to place yours in the brightest spot possible, ideally right by a south-facing window where it can soak up plenty of natural light.”

She also recommends allowing the soil to dry slightly between watering:

“I always suggest checking the top few inches of soil with your finger; if it feels dry and dusty, give it a good water, but make sure the pot can drain freely so the roots don’t get soggy.”

Alongside the Olive Tree, I also chose the Peacock Calathea – a completely different look but equally impactful. Known for its striking patterned leaves and rich green tones, it adds depth and personality to smaller corners of the flat that previously felt overlooked.

One of the things I love most about the Peacock Calathea is how dynamic it feels throughout the day. Its leaves gently move with the light, creating subtle movement that somehow makes the whole room feel more alive.

Lucy says:

“The Peacock Calathea is a total show-stopper with its intricate, feather-like patterns. It’s often called a ‘Prayer Plant’ because its leaves move up and down throughout the day, which is a lovely thing to witness.”

Because of its tropical origins, the plant thrives in more humid environments and softer lighting conditions.

“My top tip is to give the leaves a regular misting with a spray bottle. It thrives best in bright, indirect light; too much direct sun can actually fade those beautiful markings, so a spot in a well-lit room away from the window glass is perfect.”

What I’ve realised is that adding plants isn’t just about aesthetics, it genuinely changes how a home feels. The Olive Tree brings calm and softness, while the Peacock Calathea adds texture and energy. Together, they’ve made my flat feel more intentional, more welcoming, and far more connected to the season outside.
