CERU: Winter Pop Up Canon Street

Ceru21913

One of our favourite food concepts Ceru has launched their winter pop up in the middle of the city, situated a stone throw away from Canon Street station is what we are dubbing the warmest winter meal in London.

On arrival to Ceru I entered from the cold outside and was greeted by a warm waiting team, not only did they make me feel welcome after a long day at work, but they recommended immediately that I have one of their Turkish apple teas to warm me up. The tea was amazing, I took one sip and immediately felt like I was in warmer climates. This was not any old tea bag, it was fresh tea made with real apples, honey and hot water and it was a great start to a cold evening.

The concept of the meals are to share with friends, similar to the Spanish tapas layout of mini dishes that you can tuck into. I won’t go into everything that we ate but give you an idea of some of the yumminess what we experienced. Firstly the slow roast lamb shoulder with shawarma spices was purely melt in your mouth.

The meat is slow cooked with fresh pomegranate and pistachio dressing, forget Christmas turkey this needs to appear on everyone’s holiday menu. We were recommended to try the lamb alongside a few other dishes, but the ones I recommend the most are as follows:

SALAD OF SPICED SQUID AND RED PEPPERS £7.50 with a chermoula dressing

TURMERIC & CORIANDER ROAST POTATOES

SPICE ROASTED CAULIFLOWER £6.75 with walnuts, pomegranate and mint

HERBED ZUCCHINI AND FETA CHEESE FRITTERS £4.95 Spiced with cumin & cayenne pepper with dill & mint

Ok that is literally everything I ate. Remember I said the food is amazing, so regardless of what you eat you won’t be disappointed.

I can hear you whispering but what about the booze? Ceru has created some signature cocktails to go with their Middle Eastern menu and also have a selection of Middle Eastern wines, I tried one of the Lebanese red wines and can I say it probably was the best red wine I have had in a while. It was smoky, but not too full bodied and matched everything we ate from the lamb to the squid. I highly recommend trying the wine. The cocktails were potent in a good way! I am not a lover of spirits, but my friend had two different cocktails and loved them. She would have easily tried every cocktail on the menu if given half a chance. Which in her language is a double thumbs up for the Ceru cocktail master.

The concept behind Ceru is simple – fresh, seasonal ingredients, expertly prepared and available for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Ceru aims to share the flavours of the Levant (Middle Eastern cuisine) and showcases the most vibrant, healthy and colourful dishes, whether you are eating in or taking away. Tom Kime is the executive chef and has created a range of light and bright dishes of the region encompassing Cyprus, Turkey, Lebanon and Israel.
