City Wonders Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius Day Tour From Rome Review

A few months ago we introduced you to the tour company, City Wonders. The company which began in 2004, invited me along on their City Wonder’s Pompeii and Mt Vesuvius Day Trip from Rome. I went along on the 27th October 2018 with tour guide, Louise and bus drive, Cesare. It was well worth the early start for this 13 hour day trip from Rome.

Throughout the day Louise provided interesting facts about Rome, Italy and Pomepii throughout our journey, and gave us plenty of time to nap on the bus if needed.

Once in Pompeii, we were greeted by an official local guide in Pompeii who took us on an hour and a half tour through the ancient Roman city. In 79AD, Pompeii was buried under 4 to 6 m of volcanic ash and pumice when the still active Mount Vesuvius erupted. Many of the inhabitants were also buried before they could escape. It was so interesting and definitely a highlight of the trip. The ancient Romans have always been a culture that has fascinated me, especially with their advanced plumbing and architecture for that era.

After an informative walk through Pomepii, we set off for an authentic Neapolitan pizza lunch. Who knew that Margherita pizza was named in 1889 in honor of the Queen of Italy, Margherita of Savoy, and the Italian unification, since toppings are tomato (red), mozzarella (white) and basil (green), represent the same colors of the national flag of Italy. I certainly didn’t, but this was a fun fact learnt on the day. The Margherita pizza I had at the restaurant where we stopped was absolutely amazing and kicked started nearly a week of eating pizza nearly every day whilst I was in Italy.

Once lunch was finished, we walked off the pizza induced calories by climbing Mt Vesuvius. We were pretty lucky that day, as at the start of our adventure, weather conditions indicated the national park may be shut. Fortunately I was able to make it up to the volcano to tick off two items on my bucket list – climb an active volcano and buy a bottle of wine from the top of a volcano.

We returned home via a stop at a local store to sample wines, limoncello, olive oils and truffle from the Naples region. It was the perfect location to stock up on gifts and treats to enjoy during the rest of your time in Rome.

I enjoyed the tour so much, I ended up purchasing one of City Wonder’s original Dark Rome Tours and a day trip to Tuscany. They were just as great as my first City Wonders tour and they will certainly be a tour company I will use again.
