Jimmy’s BBQ Club: South Bank Review

Jimmy Garcia’s BBQ Club, a venue we visited back in 2016 is back! Located on South Bank, the same venue as The Lodge in 2017, The BBQ Club is set the perfect split-level, riverside summer venue to waste away summer days and nights. The venue features both a walk-up BBQ Bar showcasing mouth-watering dishes straight from the grill and the BBQ Club rooftop restaurant.

The walk-up BBQ Bar will be serving super-fresh and speedy BBQ dishes such as Hot Smoked salmon with grain salad and crème fraiche, or the delectable monkfish burger with tarragon mayonnaise and dill pickled cucumber. These dishes are priced at £10 or under so are ideal for a those who fancy a quick bite to eat on the go. Downstairs, guests can also enjoy a range of G&Ts, beers and ciders with a gorgeous view of the Thames.

Upstairs though is where it’s really happening and it is entirely worth the £45.00 per person. The six course menu consists of a mix of vegetarian, seafood, meat and dessert dishes which guests cook on the ‘Big Green Egg’ Grill. Jimmy and his talented team of helpers, will inform you of how to use the grill and while this is a not your typical night out, you soon forget you’re cooking. Especially as Jimmy as really done all the hard work for you, ensuring your sides and the plates are presented beautifully before you add the grilled dish to your plate.

The first dish consisted of ‘Char Ma lass’: Miso glazed charred baby aubergines, pomegranate molasses yoghurt, pickled green chili, fresh mint. I loved this dish and I’m not an aubergine (or eggplant as I call it) eater at all. The flavours worked so well together and the aubergines were very melt in your mouth.

Next up was the ‘Holy Guacamole’: Charred squid, green olive and avocado guac, lime and rocket oil – I grew up on squid so this dish was an updated child hood classic. The avocado guacamole was perfection, though make sure you cook your squid properly as it can end up slightly chewy if you’re not careful.

‘Hard Core Prawn’: Langoustine, roast red pepper puree, black garlic, jamon, smoked almond – This dish was actually my guest’s favourite. A huge feat, considering he was the most nervous about this seafood course. I also enjoyed it, but wished the dish consisted of King Prawns rather than Langoustine. Blame the Aussie in me, I grew up on prawns and Langoustines so there just wasn’t enough of it.

‘Proper Kebab’: Lamb kebab, flat bread, taziki, pomegranate tabbouleh, mint oil. – This course was probably our least favourite of the night. Both of us aren’t lamb eaters, so would have been happier with a chicken or beef dish but the other guests on our table devoured their lamb kebabs, so it seemed to be a hit with everyone else. The accompanying flat bread, taziki and tabbouleh is absolute fabulous, however, so those who aren’t red meat eaters will still be happy.

Summer at Next door’: Pork chop, potato salad, charred corn heritage tomato salsa, bbq sauce, charred spring onion – Now as the last savoury dish of the night, this was definitely my favourite. The bbq sauce was divine and the potato salad was just delicious.

Our last dish was ‘Honey for ma Sugar’: Griddled apricots, honey mascarpone, ginger biscuit crumb, candied orange peel – The perfect way to end an enjoyable meal and in my opinion, a light dessert is always the best. The candied orange peel added a tangy contrast to the sweet apricots and honey mascarpone cheese.

Our meal was accompanied by a selection of drinks available from the upstairs bar and we couldn’t have been happier to wash our meal down with G&T’s, Rum and Cokes, Wines and Cavas.

Expect Jimmy’s BBQ Club to sell out fast as it’s going to be the hottest destination to be this summer. So hurry up and reserve your table now from WWW.THEBBQCLUB.COM or email [email protected].

The night was incredibly enjoyable, especially for a date and with friends. It’s intimate but that something a little different so I’m positive you’ll be talking about it for years to come. Book now to avoid disappointment.
