MOTO – A new Japanese drinking spot takes flight in Convent Garden

Nestle amongst the diverse array of eateries and bars, Convent Garden welcomes Moto; a new Japanese drinking spot, serving a range of independent craft sakes and Japanese spirits (Inc. whisky, vodka and Absinthe) sourced directly from Japanese producers.

The décor is minimalist and modern with just 20-30 covers, although the small space is well designed with ‘floating’ tables and additional padded seating lining the length of the bar. Large windows allow in natural light and for the unique display of Sake on the back wall to catch the eye of a passerby.

Newcomers and lovers of sake alike can embark on a palate pleasing journey with Moto’s sake tasting flight, where you can gain an insight into this complex world of different aromas, flavours and characters.

My dining companion and I were treated to 3 samples of sake selected by our sake sommelier, served in tulip wine glasses rather than sake cups – we learned that serving it in this manner allows the aromas to disperse. Neither of us are new to Sake, but this was more than just drinking, we were pleasantly surprised as we embarked on a journey of sensory perception. The sakes flights we tried were Yuho Junmai,  Jokigen Junmai Daiginjo Dewasansan, Shinomine Yamadanishiki Junmai (Junmai = ‘pure rice’).

The food menu at Moto has been designed to compliment the drinks offering, changing seasonally as new flavour pairings are discovered by the team. We sampled a few of the mouthwatering Japanese snacks these included: Chicken Fry – Coated in crispy tempura crumb and sake batter with a squeeze of lemon, Nekomanma – A delicious warm bed of rice topped with soy-cured yolk and bonito flakes drizzled in the well seasoned broth from Nasu No Nibitashi – Simmered aubergine  (a family recipe). Moving forward the plan is to introduce European inspired dishes to the menu to demonstrate how different cuisines can be successfully paired with sake.

The owners have successfully created a bar that pays homage to Japanese drinking culture. As an experienced sommelier, their aim is to share knowledge and highlight the variety, complexity and craftsmanship that goes into producing sake, showcasing Japan’s finest independent and hard-to-reach sake breweries. Their unique collection includes bottles of rare sake, shochu, and a variety of other Japanese craft spirits, with something available for every taste.

A perfect spot to relax away from the hustle and bustle, and with bottles available for purchase alongside helpful suggestions on food parings, serving temperature etc. you can take flight and try your own tasting experience in the comfort of your home. Kanpai!
