Review: Avenue Q Musical

A musical featuring puppets, that’s one for the family you say? Avenue Q is anything but. Addressing issues such as racism, homosexuality, and even a good old love story.

We follow the main protagonist Princeton a recent graduate trying to find his purpose (as a graduate aren’t we all) as he moves into the a new neighbourhood (Avenue Q) and meets a colourful host of characters such as the sweet Kate Monster, Christmas Eve (one of the human characters) and the porn obsessed Trekkie Monster.

Initially the presence of the actors controlling the puppets seemed a little bit confusing, that initial fear soon diminished and you are immersed into the lives of the characters through song and adult humour. If anything the actors facial expressions added to the comedy and heartfelt moments of the show.

With songs such as ‘Everyone’s a little bit racist’ and ‘The internet is for porn’ the theatre erupted in constant laughter and lets not mention the highlight of the show, the sex scene between Kate Monster and Princeton.

The star of the show for me was Sarah Harlington who played Kate Monster and Lucy the slut effortlessly, her voice filled the theatre and commanded attention.

With such rave reviews after its West End run I was nervous Avenue Q would not live up to its reputation but this small yet pleasantly surprising production did not fail to deliver. Be sure to catch it before it goes on tour.
