Review: John Doe Wild Food Restaurant

Catching up with old chums is always a joy and showing them a great restaurant always makes me happy. So it was with great luck we headed up to decadent Notting Hill and visited the gorgeous John Doe!

Exterior (1)

John Doe specialise in wild British produce with a real pride in the sourcing of their produce. Their restaurant is rather unconventional in a beautiful way. You can either be seated at one of their tables or the bar surrounding the kitchen, which means you can chat to the chefs and see what they are cooking! This was amazing as when the time came to order we just asked the chef for his recommendations.

So (of course on recommendation) we tried a few of their dishes!

For starters we chose the girollles (mushroom), duck egg, pane fritto (£8); roasted leeks, capers with entails and tarragon (£6); octopus, chickpeas and aioli (£8); and smoke row doe tartare, quips egg and toast (£7).

Wow what a start! Our favourite was the duck egg with mushrooms. It was divine. Was seasoned to perfection, with crispy toppings blanketing the softly fried egg. Mmmmmm…The octopus was also surprisingly lovely. Very tender, I’m a convert!

It was then time for our mains. We chose the vegetarian aubergine and tomato stew accompanied by lentils and flatbread (£11.50). We also opted for the Roe Doe haunch steak teamed with bone marrow, fries and a watercress and caper salad (£23).

Wow both were so different yet gorgeous! The steak was a beautifully delicate medium-rare. The salad tangy and flavoursome. I’m not sure I am sold on bone marrow though, it was a little gelatinous.

However our favourite was stew! The lentils cooked perfectly Al dente, and accompanied with tender aubergine, harissa that made your mouth sing and cooling yogurt. I couldn’t stop chomping!

To finish the meal we tried the chocolate terrine with pistachio creme (£7). What a rich and naughty way to end the evening. Super chocolatey and rich, you just can go wrong with that. I think one between two was definitely enough! Hats off chef!

Our lovely waiter checked up on us all evening and paired all our food with gorgeous wines. He definitely knew what he was talking about!

If you are looking to treat a friend or impress a parent try John Doe. Proud of their food and produce with upbeat and friendly class A chefs in the kitchen, this is not a restaurant to be missed!
