Rotten Royals At London Dungeons

I love Tudor history so you can imagine my excitement when ONIN was invited to review the new show Rotten Royals at the London Dungeons.  Launched on 22 July, the show transports guests to 1536 when Henry VIII reigned. Experience his wrath for traitorous actions by his subjects including his second wife Anne Boleyn who has been accused of adultery. You’ll face trial for your traitorous actions but will you be sentenced to be hung, boiled alive or executed? Meet the executioner and find out…if you dare.

London Dungeon offers 16 shows and two rides to bring London’s history alive. As well as Tudor history, you’ll experience the Great Fire of London, learn about Jack the Ripper and see how justice was carried out in the 18th century. You’ll end in 1783 where The Long Drop is being used for the first time. This vertical free drop ride is aptly named Drop Dead. It’s a short ride but we screamed!

We loved how there is so much audience interaction and participation. Will you be chosen to be beheaded? Or experience torture? Or  like my friend, will you be accused of witchcraft? Our recommendation is to follow the actor’s lead, whether that’s booing at others or reading a warrant, and fully immerse yourself in the experience.

The set, lighting and costumes were fantastic. Straight after the bag search at the entrance you enter a dark tunnel. With its dark narrow tunnels, the short boat ride helped to convey the sense of unease and uncertainly prisoners would have felt on their way to the Tower of London. The torture props helped us learn about instruments used in the past, while the costumes- from guards to judges to executioners, conveyed instantly which period of London history you were in. The silence, wind and general atmosphere is particular praiseworthy when you sit in the chair at Sweeney Todd’s barber shop.

It’s a fun yet educational experience to see, hear, feel and smell London’s past. Our experience took us about 90minutes to complete. Travelling through time can be hungry and thirsty work, so good job there’s a restaurant in the form of a British pub at the end of the experience.
