Summer @ Shakeshack Covent Garden

I adore wandering around Covent Garden. I love the busy hum of chatter and laughter brought from every corner of the globe. Every age, gender and ethnicity graces its streets and yerns for both entertainment from the street artistry and prime people watching spots to enjoy light lunches and decadent dinners.

Therefore I lept at the chance to take a chum down and sample Shakeshacks summer menu. Nabbing an outdoor seat we were helped to decide on some chow by a couple of friendly staff, whom recommended us with some of their faves.

Even though it was a Saturday and super busy our food only took about ten mins, which was great as we were starvin’ Marvin’! And boy it hit the spot. I have to admit before the dinner I was a corndog virgin, and yes a battered frankfurter sausage IS as good as it sounds. When teamed with really tangy mustard it went down rather well I must say.

When it comes to burgers I’ve learned to note 3 things. The bun, the patty and the sauce. The bun should not be standalone it should complement the whole burger and add to the burgery experience not hinder it. Shakeshack have got that sorted with a not too bready sweet un’ teamed with a juicy, meaty patty and my fave part the sauce, yumtacular. We tried both the ShackBurger and the SmokeShack (topped with bacon) and it was hard to choose our favourite.

imageYou can tell a lot about a burger joint by its fries. Shakeshacks were crispy and lathered in a cheesy sauce (a delightful take on the conventional English cheesy chips) which provided a smooth customer when dunked into my vat of ketchup.

We also indulged in a couple of frozen custard concretes, the summer blueberry and Drury Lane Jam beasties. Loaded with chunklets, each mouthful contained a surprise. Our only criticism was a more even distribution of yummy bits would have been cool, as our bottoms were left rather bare! However the top half rivalled even my favourite Ben & Jerrys flavour!

Overall Shakeshack has a clean and modern take on diner food, which is a refreshing change from its trendy shabby chic cousins. The portions may not satisfy the largest appetite, however the food quality is surprisingly brilliant for a fast good joint. All I can say is I hope the US continues to supply us with these corking restaurant chains!
