The Botanist Gin Review

We promised you and here it is, The Botanist Gin Review. The Botanist is the Scottish Island Islay’s first and only dry gin. With 31 botanicals, including 22 foraged botanicals from Scotland. The Scottish forged botanicals include apple mint, chamomile, creeping thistle, downy birch, elder, gorse, hawthorn, heather, juniper, lady’s bedstraw, lemon balm, meadowsweet, mugwort, red clover, spear mint, sweet cicely, bog myrtle, tansy, water mint, white clover, wild thyme, wood sage. I’ve tried gins with 24 botanicals, but this would be a first with this large quantity, especially with the amount of unusual ingredient being used.

The Botanist press release states there are ‘nine classic gin botanicals are augmented by 22 local herbs and flowers, all foraged responsibly by hand from the hills, shores and bogs of the Hebridean Island by botanical scientists’.

At first glance the bottle appears minimalist, however, you soon notice the Latin names etched around the bottle. This is extremely effective and makes it stand out in my current gin collection.

Upon opening the bottle, the chamomile was the first scent that jumped out for me so I was expecting quite a floral gin. At first sip, though the citrus notes make themselves known and leaves a refreshing spice on the palette. It was lovely as a gin and tonic as you find the botanicals simply just compliment each other. Something that could have gone horribly wrong, but The Botanist got ‘oh so right’.

The Botanist can be purchased for £34.99 (70cl) or £12.00 (20cl) from Nationwide premium retailers and has an ABV of 46%. This Christmas, your bottle of The Botanist is encased in a special edition metal tin – definitely added protection for when your transporting it home. Or why not buy the limited edition Christmas gift pack, featuring the signature 70cl bottle, as well as a unique mixing glass. We’re glad we’ve added it to our collection… you will be too!
