‘Buzzworthy: Cocktails Inspired by Female Literary Greats’ Out Now

Reading a book with a cocktail in hand is a perfect way to spend a cosy evening or a sunny weekend. As such, at ONIN we were excited to learn about  ‘Buzzworthy: Cocktails Inspired by Female Literary Greats’. This is a cocktail book honouring female writers that perfectly blends the two. It’s written by Jennifer Croll, author of  several books about culture and cocktails including ‘Free the Tipple’ and illustrated by Rachel Baker.

The book is organised into literary fiction and short stories, poetry, genre fiction, graphic novels and non-fiction/essays. Each double page spread features one important female writer including their background and literary distinction and a tribute cocktail- a tipple dedicated to a person and inspired by their life, creative output or personality.  One page has an illustration f the author, their works and the cocktail, whilst the other contains the recipe and text about the writers.

There’s 50 unique and imaginative  cocktails listed in the book. Unfortunately I can’t list all of them here. Some of the cocktails are inspired by the writers’ works such as Celeste Ng’s which features a flaming lime (a nod to her novel ‘Little Fires Everywhere’), Rupi Kaur’s which has honey for sweetness  (inspired by her poetry collection ‘Milk and Honey) and Virginia Woolf’s peach and mint creation with a modernist flair comprised of  oaked rum (inspired by the character in Woolf’s ‘Orlando’ who spends 300 years writing ‘The Oak’). Others were inspired by the author’s background such as a Whiskey Sour comprised of Irish whiskey for Irish novelist Sally Rooney or inspired by what the authors themselves liked to drink such as an apricot cocktail for Simone De Beauvoir. Some were inspired by the themes of the works such a sultry rum cocktail for Eve Babitz or a bloody ice cold cocktail for Gillian Flynn.

‘Buzzworthy: Cocktails Inspired by Female Literary Greats‘ is very educational.  I learnt about some female writers who were previously unknown to me, and more about the authors who were already known to me.  Each of their stories were fascinating and I couldn’t out the book down.

I loved the layout, artistic style and bold colours. This makes it  both sophisticated and fun. It’s perfect for book lovers and for cocktail lovers. At only £14.95 it’s a great gift or self-indulgence.

A recommended reading list concludes the book, and I’ve already added ones I want to read to my To Be Read pile. Now please excuse me whilst I enjoy a cocktail and celebrate female literature!
