Life is way too short

Most mornings, I wake up in such a rush. It’s very rare I wake up and have enough to mediate; wake up to go for a jog or wake up to just lay in bed and appreciate the fact that I have woken up. Over the past couple of months I have heard of so many deaths, experienced close ones depart and seen families broken due to the departure of their loved ones. This has been extremely hard to comprehend; it has made me reflect on both the future and the present. It has made me wonder what I will do if close ones of mine continue to depart. It has made me wonder if I should hold on harder to loved ones or acknowledge that everything and everyone will die one day.

So I ask, should I be sad that the world and everything else as we know it will not exist or should I hold on tighter to precious moments. Life can be hard, but it makes the journey all more interesting, appreciative and memorable. How do you do you want to be remembered when your time comes? Do you want to be remembered as the ‘always busy person? Unhappy? Boring? Miserable?’ We all have our moments however; LIFE IS WAY TOO SHORT so embrace the good and happy times.

What I have decided is no matter what age, shape, colour or size we will all depart so it is important to seize these precious moments as travellers of the world, as pilgrims in this realm and as lovers of the living. Most importantly to use every opportunity to create precious moments and happy memories. We deserve to be happy, we deserve loved so love easily and forgive quickly because tomorrow is not promised.

So with that said, here are my 5 top tips of embracing life’s precious gifts:

1. Do what you love

It is so important not to succumb to today’s society, don’t just do things that people think is fun, or do things that seem fun for others. Ask yourself, what do you like doing? Do you like reading? Then do it! Do you like working out? Then do it! Do you like socialising? Then… you get the picture. Life is way too short to spend it doing things to please others or to make you look good in the eyes of others. Do what you want to do, do what YOU love to do.

2. Spend time with close ones

For those that know who their real friends are and those who are growing and finding out how people are; one word of advice, if someone shows you who they are believe them the first time around. If someone is going to love you and be there for you, they will. No matter what, they will make time. For those that have their close nit of friends and family please do not let this cultivating social platform hinder you from spending quality time with your close ones, don’t stay weeks just communicating via Instagram, Twitter, Facebook or what’s app. Find time to meet up regularly, even if just for an hour in the local park or at the fish and chips next door. It is important that your time here (on this planet) is spent with dear ones, not on a social platform that you spend with everyone else.

3. Sometimes, just do nothing

Have you heard that Bruno Mars song? It goes something like ‘Today I don’t feel like doing anything’ he sings it with monkeys. If you haven’t, you must check it out on Youtube. We are creatures of habit. We get up, go to work, come home, have dinner, sleep and the vicious cycle continues. Do something different by doing nothing at all. Stay in bed, go a day without make up and stay in you PJ’s! Not only will this give you time to reflect but it will also give you time to hibernate from your cycle.

4. Gratitude

I cannot tell you how important it is to be grateful. No matter what your current situation is, someone is far worse. If you have everything and yet still continue to complain then I urge you to please STOP THIS! There are people that don’t have food to eat, yet you complain about the food given to you. There are people who don’t have parents and are surfing at the hands of abusers yet you curse yours, there are people who are sick yet your healthy, there are people who would like to live the life you live; there are people who won’t wake up as you read this article, yet you have the privilege. So I plead to you, to be grateful for the little things like the sun rising and the big things like having a child.

5. Awareness

This is such an important skill to have at all stages of your life, with this you can succeed in all the above. You will know what you love in order to do it, you will realise who your true close ones are and spend time with them, you will notice when it is time to do nothing and will you know when you have to be grateful. So be aware of your surrounds in order to in touch with your inner self and remember that LIFE IS WAY TOO SHORT!
