Ondina Gin Review

O’ndina is a new small-batch, super- premium Italian gin. Inspired by the Italian Riveria circa 1960s it oozes glamour, sophistication and charm.

Created by the Campari Group, O’ndina is handcrafted in Italy using 19 Italian botanicals. Zesty lemons and oranges from southern Italy and fresh basil from Liguria (the Grande Verde di Genova variety which is known for its bright green colour and refreshing sweetness) are just two of the ingredients. Others include: Juniper from the Apennine Mountains, orris root from Tuscany, liquorice from Calabria, and sage, marjoram, thyme and fennel from Piemonte and neighbouring towns.

The bright juniper notes compliment the Mediterranean herbs, creating a dry, citrus taste. There are lingering notes of black pepper spice and liquorice. Fortunately, the spices notes are not overpowering. O’ndina is crystal clear in colour and is made using clear spring water from the Alps.

Given the ingredients and flavours,
it’s easy to see why O’ndina Gin is described as “the spirit of the Italian Riviera”. The design on the bottle also conjures this, given the woman looking out over the beach to the horizon with a sunset. Blues and greens with some a yellow sun and a wavy font help create a summery feel.

A refreshing herbaceous gin, it’s paired perfectly with Mediterranean tonic, a slice of a citrus fruit and fresh basil. As it’s made by the makers of Campari, it’s also fitting to serve it as an all-Italian negroni. Given the heatwave we’re having in the UK right now, O’ndina is the perfect gin to transport us to the Italian Riviera.

O’ndina can be purchased from stores or online. Retailers include Amazon, Harvey Nichols, Waitrose and specialist stores. It retails for around £33 for 700ml (at 45% alcohol content) though prices vary depending on the retailer.
