While there are many stories about the origin of the Margarita, the first time the world heard about this infamous cocktail was in December 1953 in the pages of Esquire Magazine in the US. “She’s from Mexico, Señores,” read the feature and the recipe that followed is precisely what we would recognise today as a classic Margarita: tequila, lime juice, triple sec, salt rim on thestemmed glass.
It took a few more years before the Margarita could really take off though. The evidence suggests that it was Vern Underwood, a Los Angeles liquor importer and distributor, who really got things going when he noticed that one of his accounts, McHenry’s Tail o’ the Cock restaurant, was selling more tequila than the rest puttogether. The reason of this success was the Margarita, a cocktail that Tail o’ The Cock’s bartender John Durlesser had named after his girlfriend Daisy around 1939.
Advertised by Underwood, by the middle of the 1960s the Margarita was everywhere. Over the years, the success of the drink has translated into numerous twists and reinterpretations and today is still one of the bestselling worldwide. The foundation of any perfect Margarita however, whether it’s a classic or a twist,is always ultra-premium Patrón Tequila.
If you are unable to head to one of the bars on the Margarita map, take the road to Margarita Perfection by following these three simple indications at home: Patrón Reposado tequila, PatrónCitrónge Orange Liqueur and fresh lime juice. The final destination? The Perfect Patrón Margarita.
