TriOpera Review

Pamela Tan-Nicholson’s new production, TriOperas has now opened at the Peacock Theatre. TriOperas focuses on bringing the best-known female characters from the operas Turandot, Madam Butterfly and Carmen into the modern world. Each opera is condensed to roughly 35 minutes in a fast paced whirlwind of movement, colour, costume changes and rapidly moving sets.

Those familiar with the stories of Turandot, Madam Butterfly and Carmen know that each opera ends in tragedy. This is probably the only downfall of condensing the operas as it allows the audience little time to emotionally connect with the female leads. Despite this, the stories are easy to follow and the motivation behind each tragedy is artfully explained.

I found each Opera, progressively better than the last with Carmen by far being the best performance of the night. Keep an eye out for the Chinese Dragon style Bull, it’s a scene stealer for sure. Definitely the highlight of the night.

For those who want to experience three popular operas in one night, then TriOperas is for you. There is a mix of opera, classical music, musical theatre, circus, martial arts and dance. It’s bright and colourful despite the tragic stories of our heroines and the audience seemed to really enjoy it. Those who are opera traditionalists, might argue that the classics are a classic for a reason but theatre is supposed to be there to be creative and inspire. TriOperas definitely achieves this.
