Wing Shack opens in Selfridges

Put the words wing and shack together in the same breath, wing shack…..wings …and…shack. What does it conjure up in your mind. It may be a bunch of hipster skaters parked outside a popup street food stall with buckets of chicken, a deep south picture of mama’s secret recipe perhaps? How about sun, beach and a fiery snack served from a wooden hut?

Whatever our vision before, it now conjures up an explosion of unique flavours, delivered via some of the crispiest juiciest chicken we’ve tasted in a while. Founded only three years ago by three food loving friends, Wing shack aims to bring the humble wing to a new level with unique and distinct flavours from across the world. With restaurants in Loughton, Clerkenwell and Bethnal Green, the explosion is more than just the flavour.

This month they opened up in Selfridges. The food court at Selfridges, Oxford Street may throw up visions of sushi and bellini’s served in a trendy but somehow sterile environment. As the street food revolution advances, it’s time for this food offering to evolve and we cannot be happier to see Wing Shack, up and running, serving up their tasty wings!

From the sweet and sticky enthusiast, to the hot and fiery. There’s a variety to suit all chicken affectionados, all with a subtle twist. Chang’s Honey & Sesame combines the honey and soy  sauce vibe with toasted sesame seeds, it’s messy and we love it. Don’t be fooled by the gentle sounding Mango Mazzaline, it may be sweet, but it’s a wolf in fruity chicken’s clothing. Once your taste buds sing through the tangy coating, they are hit with a fiery punch that will leave chilli thrill seekers reaching for more.

Traditionalists can opt for a classic buffalo, with the tang and spice you might expect, accompanied by a heat taming blue cheese and celery dip. So good the “Jarvis Tangy Buffalo” wings bear the name of one of the founders Joshua Jarvis himself.

If bones aren’t your thing, the Wing Shack menu includes some pretty impressive burger options. The invitingly entitled “Eat my thighs” is a hunk of a juicy piece of chicken, with a light crisp coating on brioche. A sweet red cabbage slaw, melted cheese and chilli mayo are the backing singers that lift the main act to another level. In the mood for a smokier number? Opt for the brand new Chipotle burger.

Non-meat eaters are also covered with veggie and vegan options such as the crispy fired jackfruit Veganwings”, Jackfruit smokey BBQ Burger and Edgy Veggie with Greek halloumi, marinated portobello mushroom, relish onion and lettuce. Watch this space as a fully plant-based “Vegan shack” will soon be available via deliveroo.

Have your fries loaded with Jarv’s tangy blue cheese buffalo sauce, have then cut from sweet potato or have them regular. Hell, ditch the fries and go for fried plantain, whatever your side. We know you will leave Wing Shack with a tingling in your mouth, whether that’s sweet or hot, it will be welcomed.

The opening of their fourth London site at Selfridges, is a well deserved step for a young business that is trying to break the mold of a food type that has yet to truly see its day. With a new audience maybe this is the chance. One thing’s for sure, we will be heading to one of the actual Wing Shack restaurants next, to experience the vibe and hope it feels as good as the food tastes. We will let you know.
