The Real Greek Review

The Real Greek’s Aegean Kitchen menu launched on 4th June at their flagship bankside site. Created by
Asimakis Chaniotis, the only Michelin-starred Greek chef, the menu pays homage to Greek’s 6000 Islands.

Asimakis along with Tonia Buxton from The Real Greek hosted the press dinner on 4th June. The seven items available exclusively on this menu at the Bankside restaurant were served communal style which allowed us to sample all the dishes.

Aegean Octopus Salad (£9.50) is created through mixed peppers, red onions and diced potatoes, dressed with extra virgin olive oil and white wine vinegar finished with Greek oregano. It was one of our favourites of the night due to its light and tasty flavours.

Skewers of grilled monkfish with mixed peppers was served with a garlicky Ouzo tzatziki. The fish was perfectly cooked and at £8.50 it is a great light choice. Cod plaki baked with tomatoes and served on top of sliced potatoes looks more like a breakfast dish than dinner, but don’t let that put you off. A more hearty dish it costs £8.50.

For kalamari lovers there is the grilled kalamari served on top of cold briam (a baked mix of courgettes, peppers and potatoes) with fresh mint in a tomato sauce. It was a bit bland and needed more flavour to make this dosh standout. One of our favourite dishes was the whole kalamari stuffed with rice, courgettes, carrot and tomatoes. The flavours combined to create a great taste and the kalamari was easy to chew. It costs £11.50

The seafood stuffed cabbage dolmades with prawns, octopus, kalamari and cod dressed with a creamy Ouzo and dill sauce costs £9.50. Unfortunately, it was the dish we least liked as the flavours were quite bland. Compared to the other dishes it didn’t hit the mark.

The most impressive dish was the whole sea bass baked inside a salted bread crust. While the bread was too salty for our tastes, the fish was cooked lovely. It’s important to note that this item is subject to availability and takes 30 minutes cooking time. It’ll set you back £26.50, so best to share this one!

Overall, we had a great evening at The Real Greek due to its friendly laid back atmosphere, great food and good Greek wine. Perfectly located near the Globe theatre and Tate Modern and situated on the bank of the Thames, it’s a great place to show-off London. This Bankside location also has live music every Thursday from 7pm and Friday and Saturday from 7:30pm.
