Electrodash London

“As we squatted down in a sea of florescent bodies, it made me realise how bizarre we must look to anyone not donning an Electrodash t-shirt. Sorry ‘we’ as in martin, Gareth and I, the self-dubbed ‘ONIN DREAM TEAM’, and ‘Electrodash’ being the one and only London rave run.

We whooped into the air, and with the ten second countdown looming had a cheeky dance to the tunes that blared from the Red Bull sound system. Suddenly the gaggle of colourful runners were set free into the night! And we were greeted by an insanely cool corridor of fireworks and light.

We skipped round the 5k, weaving through people, props and car park pillars that surrounded the Excel Centre. The highlights included; some guys giving up 2 mins in and heading back, cigarette in hand grumbling, the party car park and the cheeky mid race spliff one chap had decided to indulge in……

Poor Gareth struggled though, if only he had trained more……..”

“… Yes I probably shouldn’t have lit up that spliff… I jest! Some people were drinking beer whilst they ran although the ONIN Dream Team stuck to water – the squares that we are (cool squares though). One lady ran with a pram and I can only imagine what trauma the flashing lights and blaring music must have had on the little nipper.

Other highlights include me accidentally putting a tattoo onto my face upside down, the cheers of support from pub drinkers nearby and Martin weeping at the 3k mark (begging for us to leave him behind…) But the ONIN Dream Team never leaves behind a comrade. Isn’t that right Martin?”

“I was dragged through the race kicking and screaming by my more experience running/writing friends. At this point I envied the baby, being pushed dangerously quickly through the hundreds of runners. I exercised all of my British restraint in not deposing said baby from said pram and hitching a ride myself. I’m a man of some morals after all.

Finally catching my breath on the 4k mark I joked that we should run faster. Aspen and Gareth mistook my jovial grin for a pained grimace and stepped up the velocity. I kept up somehow, and really enjoyed the fantastic firework display, the imaginative transformation of a car park with hanging, illuminated jellyfish and the general attitude of fun and adventure.

Without blowing our collective trumpet, we were one of the first to arrive at the finish line- or maybe we took so long that everyone had already left… I’m being self-deprecating- we were definitely one of the first.

So all in all there was a great, carnival type atmosphere, we were given stick-on tattoos, t-shirts and Red Bull and had a great run along the riverside as we took in some of London’s most picturesque landscapes.”

Heavily recommended.
